DUNFERMLINE CITY SQUARE
LOCATION : FIFE, SCOTLAND
DATE : 2021 – 2024
PROJECT TYPE : URBAN DESIGN / PUBLIC PARK
PHASE OF WORK : CONCEPT DESIGN (RIBA STAGE 2)
Iglu were appointed by Fife Council to create a concept design proposal for a new urban park on a gap site in the city centre of Dunfermline.
Taking inspiration from Dunfermline’s rich linen heritage, the proposal includes a new accessible for all route which weaves around an upgraded public space adjacent to the High Street and new green spaces to the north of the site. Clusters of mixed native tree planting border the edges, providing a soft buffer and framing the new spaces.

DESIGN LAYOUT OPTIONEERING
The design development process involved optioneering a variety of layouts to a range of budgets, all of which were to provide an accessible for all route from the top of the park (Queen Anne Street) to the High Street.
The upgrading and extension of the existing public space adjacent to the High Street will create a high quality multi-functional city square capable of hosting local markets, performances and exhibitions.
A buffer of native trees frames the edges, softening the view to the backs of the existing buildings and increasing biodiversity in the town centre. Suds swales will ensure water run-off is absorbed into the soil and diverted away from buildings.
