LEVEN BIRD HIDE + WALKWAY
LOCATION : FIFE, SCOTLAND
DATE : 2022 – 2025
PROJECT TYPE : ACTIVE TRAVEL NETWORK
COLLABORATION : NARRO ASSOCIATES / HARLEY HADDOW / THOMSON GRAY / BESPOKE ATELIER
PHASE OF WORK : TECHNICAL DESIGN (RIBA STAGE 4)
As part of Phase 3 of the Leven Project in Fife, Iglu introduced a new walkway and bird hide structure to improve public access to nature. The walkway will provide a connection through the existing wetland and woodlands, linking visitors to the main attraction – the bird hide – situated in the Burn Mill Dam area of the Leven Park.

The design of the bird hide at Burn Mill Dam draws inspiration from the intricate form of a bird. By mimicking the elegant curves and lines of a bird’s wings, the roof of the bird hide will not only provide shelter for visitors but also enhance the visual experience of the surrounding landscape.
Constructed from corten steel, the structure itself features windows of various sizes, strategically placed to offer clear views. Introducing natural elements into the structure such as a green roof ensures that the bird hide blends seamlessly into its environment.
Iglu Studio collaborated with Bespoke Atelier to develop patterns that evoke concepts of birds and nature which will be engraved on to each of the corten steel units.

A 3-metre wide elevated walkway has been designed to span approximately 1km from the Burn Mill Dam bird hide to the Kirkland Dam. Running parallel to the River Leven, this pathway invites both cyclists and walkers to explore the area’s diverse wetlands and woodlands. Designed to bring visitors close to nature, it also offers opportunities for educational experiences.
The walkway has been thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, ensuring accessibility for all while minimizing environmental impact. Resting stops have been strategically placed along the route, offering scenic highlights and spaces to pause and appreciate the surroundings.
